Lauren & Alex – a Grandview Wedding on Lookout Mountain

Lauren and Alex… Weddings at Grandview are always beautiful. It’s a beautiful location tucked away beside Rock City on Lookout Mountain. It really couldn’t be any prettier. The view of the Chattanooga Valley below is stunning, the staff is perfection, the Tudor style house is quaint, classic, and beautiful. Lauren & Alex’s wedding took Grandview and went a step further with it, mostly because of who they are.

Lauren IS a fabulous photographer out of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Her work is beautiful, she is beautiful. They chose to have a destination wedding in the most beautiful of places with a handful of close friends and family. I knew the wedding would be incredible but I really had no idea what I was walking in to that day when I arrived to photograph their wedding.

I’ve genuinely never met a family like theirs. The closeness, the friendship, the way they intermingled both families as if they were one from the get-go. I’ve never seen boys who loved their Mama’s that much or girls who were so close to their Daddies. I’ve genuinely never seen anything like it – families who hugged and cried and just loved each other the way they do. I was awestruck, now I’m determined to work on making my own family relationship more like theirs.

I can’t even tell you how many times I had tears in my eyes. I’ve never seen people (and I mean all of the people there) love each other so much. I genuinely wanted to ask the Groom’s mother what her secret was to raising so many amazing men who clearly adore her. The Brides 92 year old Grandmother HAD A PACEMAKER put in JUST so she could live long enough to see her granddaughter get married – she said she didn’t care if she died the moment after – but she wanted to be able to see it.

Lauren and Alex… I watched a couple get married after 8 years of being together, 7 years of living together, and having a child 4 years ago who were still so very clearly and deeply in love with each other that it seemed like new love. They still look at each other the way people do when they very first fall in love. So much respect and admiration and love all around.

I’ll let the photos tell the story – but I will say that this wedding was very special and meaningful to me and I won’t ever forget the wedding or the people involved – I truly fell in love with all of you that day <3

I’m going to tell you a secret… Gay Weddings are just like any other wedding….

A Supreme Court decision that allows gay couples to marry in any state was made today. It has people in the U.S. running the gamut of emotions…  People are thrilled, relived, happy, joyful, elated, vindicated… others are disgusted, fearful, sad, filled with rage, worried…

Every person is entitled to feel the way they do – the way they want to.

I’m going to tell you things you may not know.

Gay weddings are no different from any other wedding. I should know. I’ve photographed over 600 weddings at this point.

People are happy. There are tears. There is love. There is joy. There is happiness. There are two people standing in front of an officiant promising to spend their lives being faithful to each other, treating each other well, and making the choice to love each other every single day. There are rings exchanged. Vows are exchanged. There are pictures. There is food. There is dancing. There is family drama. There is at least one drunk person in the wedding party who you’re a little worried may not make it down the aisle. There are flowers. There is cake. There’s some crazy guest running around taking photos with an iPad all up in my way. Friends and family come. Music plays. People dance. Someone drinks too much and makes a fool of themselves. That’s every single wedding. Every one. Gay, straight, whatever… Every single one is a celebration of love.

I’ve known Lindsey her entire life. Literally. I still remember the day she was born like it was yesterday. Sitting in the waiting room, waiting, waiting, waiting… having to lie and say I was 12 (I was 10) so that I could go back in to the room and see her when she was born. I spent so much time with her when she was little that she was more like a sister than a cousin. For almost a full year when she was a toddler I was the only person she’d let brush her hair. I watched a bazillion cartoons with her. I frantically helped search for her favorite stuffed koala bear (Bee-air) every time she lost it. I read her bedtime stories and played with toys and helped officiate goldfish funerals. We made cookies. We dyed and hunted Easter Eggs. We had sleepovers at our grandmothers house. I went to football games and watched her play trumpet in the band. I taught her how to drive. I took her out to her first bar in Hilton Head to see a band – Connor Christian & Southern Gothic – on her 21st birthday.  Her entire life I’ve known her.

When Lindsey told me she was marrying Megan the only thing I felt was happiness. Because SHE was (is) happy. Because she found someone who loves her and that she loves fiercely. No shock, no surprise, no sadness… Just happiness.

Four years ago Lindsey & Megan founded a group called Tennessee Marriage Equality. They’ve fought for the right to be legally married in Tennessee and all over the rest of the country. They were one of 5 couples who won the ACLU ‘My Big, Gay, (Il)legal Wedding Contest. A photo I took of them (below this paragraph) when Megan proposed to Lindsey graced the cover of over 900 print and digital publications all over the world. They put themselves out there. They were on the news more times than I can count. They rallied. They tried to apply for marriage licenses at courthouses that turned them away.

Same Sex Wedding Proposal Chattanooga
Last year they were married in a beautiful ceremony at Stratton Hall in Chattanooga, TN. It was beautiful. It was just like every other wedding. Two people. In love. Committing themselves to each other. Just. Like. Every. Other. Wedding. Only they had to go to Washington D.C. following their ceremony with friends and family in Chattanooga, in order to legally marry after their ceremony here. (Did I mention that they did that on the Supreme Court steps? Yep).

So, as you sit and feel however you feel about the decision made today – know that two consenting adults (who happen to be gay) deciding that they want to marry, wanting to be afforded the same rights as every other married couple in this country – won’t change your world any more than any other stranger you don’t know getting married will change your world. And that the wedding itself – is just like every other wedding.

To Lindsey and Megan – Congratulations on your marriage now being legal in all 50 states, on being incredible people, on being incredible together, and for the dream you’ve been fighting for the past 4 years finally coming true. I love you both!

Haleigh & Trey’s Downtown Atlanta Engagement Session

Photographing Haleigh & Trey’s engagement session in Downtown Atlanta was a dream. I first met Haleigh nearly 10 years ago when she accompanied her sister, Rachel, to her bridal portrait session. She’s always been beautiful, kind, intelligent, and just an amazing person to be around and to know. If you know her, you love her, and Trey clearly loves her. You can see it, plainly, in the way he looks at her, the way he holds her hand, the way he smiles when she smiles or laughs. You can see how much she loves him for the same reasons. They fit. They’re simply perfect together.

We started their Atlanta engagement session at their gorgeous new apartment in Midtown Atlanta and we walked the streets they’ll walk every day, past the restaurants they dine at or will soon discover to be favorites. We strolled a past beautiful churches down to the beautiful Fox Theatre where we stopped to dance on the sidewalk. We stopped at an Italian cafe for a glass of wine, played in crosswalks, and casually stopped at places they’ll see every day for years to come. When returning back to the apartment to change clothes, Trey suggested checking out their rooftop – which ended up being some of my favorite images, before heading down to Centennial Olympic Park for sunset and twilight photos, many of which show the building that Trey works in for the Atlanta Hawks basketball team.

I loved that we were able to capture so many things that show their life, where they are now, places they see every day and how they fit in to them. It was a wonderful day and I had the best time with Haleigh and getting to know Trey. I can’t wait for your wedding in August! I know it will be as simply incredible as the two of you are!

Happy Anniversary – Pierre & Caroline – St. Peter & Paul & The Chattanoogan Wedding

I can’t believe it’s been two years since Caroline and Pierre were married at St. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church in downtown Chattanooga followed by a beautiful reception at The Chattanoogan. I am terribly behind on blogging and when I realized that today was their anniversary I decided to tell their wedding day story.

Pierre & Caroline redefined a long distance relationship with Pierre living in Chattanooga and Caroline living in England. Once Pierre decided he couldn’t live without his gorgeous Caroline he proposed. Of course there were many hoops to jump through with obtaining visa’s and such and I can’t imagine how stressful that was for them.

They were were married in a beautiful Catholic ceremony at St. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church in downtown Chattanooga, one of the most beautiful old churches in town. Their reception at The Chattanoogan mixed traditional and Middle Eastern cultures perfectly. It was filled with family, friends, and so much love and romance.

Two years later I run in to the two of them fairly often (though not as often as I would like) and you can tell that they’re still just as deeply in love as they were the day they vowed to spend their lives together. They’re one of those couples where you can feel how much in love they are just by being in the same room with them. It’s incredible, as are they.

I’ll let the photos tell the story… Happy Anniversary to the two of you! I wish you a lifetime of love and happiness!

Suits are from Giorgio Men’s Warehouse – which Pierre’s family owns – you should check if out if you’re looking for an amazing suit or 12 – they’re fantastic!
The Beautiful Flowers were designed by Amanda at Divine Designs.
The gorgeous (and always tasty) cake was created by Dan the Cake Man at Cakemakers.
Soundforce did an incredible job with the lighting, draping, sound, and chandelier.
The entire affair was coordinated by Foxy Events.

My Daughter

I rarely post anything personal or about my own children. Honestly, I don’t even photograph them that often (I am a bad, bad photographer-mom). But I must share how proud I am of my own daughter. At 14 years old she was accepted in to a program at a local college due to her GPA and ACT scores. At 15 she is currently finishing up her first year of college. She is in Phi Theta Kappa (the international honor society of two-year colleges and academic programs) and is in the Global Scholars program (an
Academic Honors Program. Its purpose is to give students the opportunity to gain a world perspective and awareness through a deeper and more connected, contextualized college experience that requires an ACT composite score of 25, a SAT score of 1130, a High school GPA of 3.50, and a GPA of 3.50 or higher based on a minimum of 12 hours of college level courses).

She’s brilliant and self motivated. Beautiful and bold. She is herself – which makes me happier than anything in the world – she is not afraid to be who she is. Her one request when accepted in to college at 14? Blue hair. You got it, girl, and you rock that blue hair.

We bought her dress at Boutique Couture and Michael at Epiphany Salon did her gorgeous blue hair!

Leaving high school to attend college meant she would give up going to prom and doing many of the things that high school students do. Last night  the Global Scholars hosted a black tie gala at the Hunter Museum of Art in downtown Chattanooga which she was invited to attend. I was thrilled that we were able to shop for a formal dress for her, have her hair done, and almost get the “prom” experience. She and her handsome date had a wonderful time and I think she looked absolutely stunning. I couldn’t be more proud of her and her accomplishments and of who she is as a person. She is the best person I know.

Jessica & Andrew’s Chattanooga Engagement Session

Sometimes the first time I meet a groom-to-be is at the Engagement Session and it’s always the first time I really, truly get to know a couple and learn about their relationship. I so enjoy spending this time with them, getting to know them, seeing how their relationship works, seeing who they are together, and getting them used to being themselves in front of a camera.

Jessica and Andrew were naturals in front of the camera, their love is very evident in the way they communicate and interact. Andrew would brush Jessica’s hair back every so gently, they laughed, they smiled, they have an amazing connection. They absolutely rocked their engagement session and I am looking forward to their wedding next month at Patten Chapel and the Read House. It’s going to be incredible!

Be Couture Group Featured in Chattanooga Magazine – Commercial Photography

I love Commercial Photography and Editorial Photography. For many years I’ve worked with three amazing women, all business owners, on a variety of projects. Last year we decided to form a group, Be Couture Group, that allows us to work together more often on creative projects because we work so incredibly well together as a team. This group not only allows us to have creativity and work together on projects, it also allows businesses, musicians, clothing designers, ad agencies, authors, magazines, and other publications to hire us as a one-stop-shop. By hiring us you get the best of the best hair stylist, makeup artist, set and clothing designer, and photographer all in one place. We have the ability to take your creative vision and run with it or to come up with a vision for you that expresses who you are.

In November, Chattanooga Magazine did a feature about our group. For this feature we decided to come up with a concept for us, something that told our stories as both individuals and as a group. I threw out the idea of the Four Elements. We are the Four Elements that need to come together in order to pull off a successful photo shoot. We are each very different but work so very well together that the Four Elements also suited our personalities perfectly. There was little discussion over who would be which element, it was already obvious to each of us which element we most resembled. This project also allowed us to play the role of the client, to experience what it’s like to be on the other side of the camera and we were absolutely in love with the results.

Here’s our feature in Chattanooga Magazine. You can view the entire article online here: http://issuu.com/chattanoogamagazine/docs/october_november

About our group:

Our group began out of thirst…thirst for creativity. Ideas flood our minds – Concepts of images; messages we want to tell the world seem to pile up. As a group we enjoy working with clients who have a vision, allow us to be creative, and we strive to create the perfect image and images for their needs.

Over dinner, and a few drinks, the ideas began pouring out! Before we knew it, It was decided…we must bring these concepts to reality. We must collaborate to create. We must MAKE time! Our minds and our talents demand it!

From working together and collaborating from time to time over years of experience in our own businesses, we knew we all would play off each other’s specialty. Melody, the photographer, Emily, the stylist, Genia, the hair styist, Angela, the makeup artist.

And now, with multiple photo shoots under our belts as a team, we realize we truly have something special! Who are our clients? Individuals, businesses, artists, ad agencies…anyone who desires to bring a vision to film. The Be Couture Group is made up of the four elements that bring an image to life!

Jordyn’s Bat Mitzvah – Bergen County NJ

Bat Mitzvah’s are always incredibly fun to photograph. Jordyn’s was simply wonderful. Jordyn is the beautiful daughter of a beautiful soul, one handsome dude, and the sister of two awesome brothers. With her mother being the incredible artist that she is, I knew Jordyn’s Bat Mitzvah would be amazing, I just didn’t know how amazing. Space, in Bergen County, NJ was completely decked out in amazing decor. Sugar Skulls, candy bars, crystals, candelabras, a pancake and waffle station, cotton candy, ice cream, glitter covered doughnuts, an aerial performer, bowling, video games, a fog machine, a confetti gun, snow even fell from the ceiling. It truly was a magical day celebrating Jordyn and her friends and family all had an amazing time.

I won’t lie, when Jordyn danced with her father I had tears welling up in my eyes. The way her father looked at her – I just hope she never doubts that she is loved because she is so very loved, you can see it on the face of every person who looked at her all day long.

I love everything about Jordyn and her family and couldn’t have imagined a more perfect day or more wonderful people to spend it with.

Dear Jordyn,

Welcome to being a teenager, one of the toughest times in life, yet one of the most incredibly fun times too. You’ll have days where you feel like the world is in your hands, and it is. You’ll have days where you feel like the world is against you. When you do – look at these photos, see how loved you are – because you are so loved. I’ve seen 1,000 people dance with their father but I’ve never seen a father so proud or beaming with SO much love. You have a wonderful Daddy and an incredible mother to guide you through your journey to adulthood. You have two brothers who look at you like you are the center of their world, they so look up to you. You have incredible friends who said the most wonderful and amazing things about you. You are blessed beyond measure and they are blessed to have such a strong, beautiful, and amazing daughter. The world is yours, beautiful girl, and I’m so happy I got to spend this day with you and all the people who love you!

Much love,

Melody

Special thanks to Hillary Maddox for coming and helping me!

Laura & Andy’s Wedding at Patten Chapel & Lindsay Street Hall

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a group of people have as much fun as the guests at Laura & Andy’s wedding had. The day started off at Patten Chapel, the gorgeous chapel on the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga campus. It was a beautiful day with blue skies, sun, and the perfect temperature. When i walked in Laura was smiling and laughing as she flipped through a book created by her close friends and family. Smiles and laughter remained the theme for the day. As you look through the photos you’ll find them filled with people who are smiling and laughing and having the time of their lives. The reception was held at nearby Lindsay Street Hall, a gorgeous old church that’s on the National Historic Register and is simply stunning. You couldn’t choose two more perfect venues for a Wedding than Lindsay Street Hall and Patten Chapel, the day went absolutely perfectly.

Laura and Andy chose to have a first look in the Shakespeare Garden outside of Patten Chapel. During their first look Laura handed Andy a photo of his father and his fathers wedding band to carry with him on his wedding day so that he could have a piece of him with him on this most special day. It was one of the most thoughtful things I’ve seen a bride do. Then the wedding party joined us for some fun photos before the ceremony began. The ceremony was lovely, the only way to describe the reception is by saying that it was simply epic, we stole Laura and Andy for a bit to take some photos right before sunset and enjoyed dancing and having fun at the reception with them!

You can tell that Laura and Andy have a strong relationship and have intermingled their family and their friends quite nicely. Everyone in attendance had a wonderful time drinking, dancing, playing cornhole, building human pyramids (I’ll admit it’s the largest and most impressive man-pyramid I’ve ever seen ;)), and enjoying each others company. I also learned that Andy can turn, literally, anything in to an air guitar… a bottle of champagne, a centerpiece, a chair, even the leg of one of his friends 😉 It was a fantastic fun-filled day.

Laura & Andy – I wish you a lifetime of happiness, love, and laughter. Thank you for having us there to capture your most amazing day!

Katie & Harley’s Grandview Wedding

The weather couldn’t have been more perfect, the couple couldn’t have been better suited for each other, and weddings at Grandview on Lookout Mountain are always incredible. Katie and her father had a sweet and emotional first look on the landing at Grandview. I love when brides have a first look with their fathers, it’s always such a sweet moment. Afterward Katie and Harley did a first look in the courtyard at Grandview. The look on Harley’s face was absolutely priceless.

Dan the Cake Man from Cakemakers did a fabulous job on the cake as always, I didn’t get to try it but everyone assured me that it’s amazing and when I ran in to Dan earlier in the day he told me that he now does gluten free cakes! Not many people in Chattanooga do, so file that one away for future use! Blue Ivy Flowers did a gorgeous job on the flowers. It truly was a perfect day and a very special day as well. April 4, 2015 was a Blood Moon and a Lunar Eclipse which is one of the reasons they chose to have their wedding on that date.

Katie had some incredible custom Converse sneakers made with their wedding date on the back in their wedding colors, so fun and so perfect for the reception!

Following their gorgeous ceremony on the patio we headed to Rock City for some photos then back to Grandview for first dances, cake, and partying! Their wedding party and family was a blast to hang out with and it was a simply fabulous wedding day beautifully coordinated by Cheryl of Blissful Moments.

I wish you a lifetime of happiness, Katie & Harley! You are simply fantastic together and I hope to see you again soon!
